The most famous institution in Tana is the Friday zoma, the public market, locally reputed to be the second largest in the world, though no one can ever tell you which one exceeds it. It is vast, many city blocks jammed with thousands of white octagonal umbrellas. Dayton's, Macy's, Harrod's, Sears and Roebuck, and Wal-Mart all jammed together outdoors. Food, furniture, crafts, drugs, clothes, junk -- whatever you need or want. Haggling is required; the market is a noisy, joyful frenzy of voices, smells, music, shouting, a mass of bodies squeezing through the narrow channels between vendors' umbrellas.
